Daily analysis, November 5

November 6, 2013

It’s Election Day in New York City – luckily, the polls close at 9, so there was no “breaking news” during the show.Cover 20131105

Woody’s at the champion’s position this time, and has the lead once again going into Final. It’s not a runaway, though.

Woody Houchin: 10,600
Rani Peffer: 7,200
Carole Furr: 5,600

Woody should wager 3,800 to cover a double-up by Rani.

Rani has two choices: wager no more than 400 to stay above Woody if he’s wrong, or wager at least 4,000 to cover Carole (but guaranteeing a loss if wrong). The latter is the better one.

Carole needs to wager at least 1,200 – and get it right – to be in contention against Woody. She might as well go for at least 1,600 (and you might even say 2,000, in case Rani chooses the “small” wager) to cover Rani. At that point, just go for the whole thing! Or at least 5,000 to cover a zero by Woody.

Re: Your comments on Carole’s various acceptable wagers – the “$2,400 maximum” figure here against Rani’s cover bet would really be meaningful only for 2nd vs. 3rd place prize considerations since that point ($3,200) is below where Woody’s cover bet would land him on a miss ($6,800), and Carole’s position meant she needed to get Final right to get into winnable territory (and the only real cost of making a larger wager would be possibly finishing with the 3rd instead of the 2nd place prize). Like you suggested from her position I’d probably go for at least $5,000 to cover as many unlikely-but-possible situations as possible.
